05 Oct 2012At our Annual General Meeting conducted at the University of Ballarat on 2 October 2012, Committee for Ballarat Chair, Tony Chew, delivered his final report to members before handing over the reins to Chair Elect Judy Verlin. In his final address to members, Tony Chew commented on the strong financial position of the Committee and its important role and standing through all levels of Government. He stated how deeply proud he had been to work with the Committee Board and members in driving key initiatives that have improved the quality of life for people in our community. He cited the securing of State & Federal Government funding commitments to the Leadership Ballarat Western Region (LBWR), the Young Adult Empowerment (YAE) program, stage 1 of the Western Link Road which will support the activation of the Ballarat West Employment Zone (BWEZ), and the establishment of a Victorian Regional Community Leadership Program Secretariat hosted in Ballarat as the key achievements during his tenure. He stated that the development of the new Action Plan, underpinned by the 6 strategic drivers, would lay a solid foundation for the future work of Committee. Tony has played a pivotal role leading the Secure & Sustainable Water Task team and noted that this group would now be expanded to drive innovation around environmental issues, including alternative sources of energy, with a focus on the BWEZ and ACU Hospital precincts. Whilst Tony is stepping down as Chair, he will continue to be an active member of this Task Team. Board member, David Battersby (University of Ballarat), spoke passionately to members about the enormous contribution Tony has made to Committee during his 3 year term as Chair. David cited Tony’s personal style and professional approach in engaging with various stakeholders as his key attributes. David said of particular note was his advocacy work in lobbying Government and presenting himself to media as a spokesperson for Committee on key issues. On behalf of members, staff and all concerned with the Committee, we wish Tony all the best in retirement and thank him for his enormous contribution. Following the AGM, Judy Verlin assumed the role of Chair of Committee for Ballarat. Board Appointments Nominations for the vacant Board positions were received with the following appointments confirmed: Executive (5 positions): Steven Coltman (Sovereign Hill) – one year term Jeremy Cowan (Mars Chocolate) – one year term Michael Krieg (St John of God Hospital) – two year term Dominic Clark (Alstom) – three year term Mayor (City of Ballarat) – three year term All Members except Small Business/Leaders in Action (LIA) (2 positions): Greg Veal (bankmecu) – one year term Andrew Rowe (Ballarat Health Services) –one year term All Members except LIA (1 position): Lynne McLennan (UFS Dispensaries) – three year term These Board appointments have varying terms – where the term is less than three years, this is to complete the unexpired portion of original term of the Board appointment subsequently filled by a casual vacancy. The contributions of retiring Board members, Andrew Loader (Mars), Joe Fleming (ACU) and Richard Nicholson (Sovereign Hill), were duly acknowledged and recognised by members.
