CEO Update April 2025

24/04/2025

In a week that has seen the passing of Pope Francis, I reflect on the role that compassion, kindness and collaboration have in leadership.

Among the many tributes, reflections and values for the late Pope, his compassion and ability to embrace all of humanity stands out.  One tribute asserted he is the one of the most influential leaders of the modern era because of his ‘willingness to take a progressive stance on many issues’.

Such a willingness requires great perspective, listening, humility and courage. These qualities thrive when we commit to collaboration. When we collaborate, we act with respect and tolerance for views that may not be our own and, when we do so, we are a more connected community, a kinder community.

Pope Francis advocated for building bridges instead of walls, emphasizing the importance of communication and understanding, and condemning actions that create divisions. For him, building bridges promotes unity.

Our political leaders can be inspired by the late Pope’s leadership as they look for our support on election day and beyond.

Our members urge our political leaders to think boldly about our future and inspire us with a vision that brings unity and opportunity for all. It’s then about actions; when a vision for a bold future intersects with getting things done, that’s when the magic happens!

Committee for Ballarat’s tagline is Thinking Ahead. Inherent in this is Thought Leadership and Advocacy. Important to both is the ability for members to share their knowledge, insights and expertise to inspire and drive positive change. This is our one wood! We exist, at least in part, to provide the opportunity for collaboration, curiosity, conversation, innovation and inspiration as we play our role in helping to shape our region’s prosperous, sustainable, inclusive and liveable future.

As we elect those that will make up the 48th Parliament, let’s hope our political leaders can take some inspiration from the late Pope and advocate for a kinder world and the courage to build bridges.
