Newly appointed Chair of Committee for Ballarat, George Fong, is confident that our region has the ability not only to meet the challenges of a growing population but also to prosper, building on our unique strategic advantages – our proximity to Melbourne, our diverse economy, access to an abundance of renewable energy, and our outstanding natural and cultural tourism assets.
Mr Fong, who takes up his appointment on 1 July 2022, recognises the vital leadership role that Committee plays and will continue to play to ensure that our regional community is a thriving and vibrant one recognised for its liveability, sustainability and inclusiveness.
“I am excited to be joining Committee for Ballarat at a critical time in our region’s development. The Commonwealth Games in 2026 provides a wonderful opportunity to put in place infrastructure in terms of sporting facilities, housing and transport that will have a lasting benefit for our community,” Mr Fong said.
“The access we have to renewable energy throughout the region, and the potential for developments in transmission and generation, give us an exciting opportunity to contribute to the nation’s energy transition. Committee for Ballarat can play a lead role in working with our members and the community to ensure we can maximise the benefits of the energy transition for our regional community, businesses and the environment.”
Interim Chair, Rodney Walton, welcomed the appointment. He said, “Mr Fong is a passionate advocate for our region who has held leadership positions within the health, tertiary education and IT sectors. He will bring to the Board table considerable business and governance experience, an inclusive and collaborative leadership style, and a strong belief and understanding of the critical role that Committee for Ballarat plays in the region.”
